Company Description and History
Sandia was established through the U.S. government's national security initiatives. Sandia National Laboratories is a premier science and engineering lab for national security and technology innovation in the United States. Founded in 1949, Sandia originated as a part of the Manhattan Project during World War II, focusing on non-nuclear components of nuclear weapons. Today, it operates under the management of National Technology and Engineering Solutions of Sandia (a subsidiary of Honeywell International), with a primary mission of developing science-based technologies that support national security. Sandia's work spans a variety of areas including nuclear deterrence, national security, energy and infrastructure, and more.
Military Veterans Programs
Sandia National Laboratories has a strong commitment to supporting military veterans. The organization values the unique skills, experiences, and perspectives that veterans bring to their workforce. Sandia offers programs and initiatives aimed at recruiting and retaining veterans. These efforts include partnerships with military and veterans organizations, career development programs tailored for veterans, and a supportive community that facilitates the transition from military to civilian careers.
Sandia National Laboratories’ Exceptional Warrior Career Development Program (EWCDP) provides unique limited-term employment supporting national security missions, while helping participants acquire career skills through training and mentoring. EWCDP participants who perform well have the potential to transition to regular full-time employment.

Military Support Committe
The Military Support Committee is a Sandia employee resource group created more than 15 years ago to support and engage veterans, active military personnel, guardsmen, and reservists, along with non-military employees who have family members deployed. The committee’s goal is to foster a military-friendly community and culture that supports Sandia’s mission.
The Military Support Committee leads Sandia’s annual Veterans Day events that take place at Sandia’s Albuquerque and Livermore sites to mark the holiday and honor the achievements and sacrifices of Sandia military personnel. The committee also played a role in increasing the number of veterans hired at the Labs in the last few years. In fiscal year 2018, Sandia tripled the number of military veterans hired, marking the highest veteran hiring rate in the history of the Labs.
Culture and Values
The culture at Sandia is driven by its mission to serve national security interests. The laboratory fosters a culture of innovation, integrity, and excellence. It values collaboration, diversity, and inclusivity, encouraging its staff to bring diverse perspectives and ideas to solve complex problems. Sandia is dedicated to scientific excellence and ethical conduct in all its endeavors, creating an environment where employees are encouraged to be innovative and forward-thinking.
Internships
Each year, Sandia welcomes students from around the country—from those in their final years of high school to researchers obtaining PhDs—to work in a variety of technical and business positions. Interns work on real-world, challenging projects to contribute to critical national goals.
Many of our research internships can be experienced through technical institutes that encompass a range of disciplines, including cyber security, energy surety, engineering design, and software development.
