Senior Scientist and Director Lung Screening Programs

The Senior Scientist provides scientific, strategic and operational leadership for the department.

The position is responsible for the development, implementation, oversight and evaluation of the department’s programs, integrating clinical operations, population health, data analytics, outcomes research, community engagement and continuous quality improvement.

Serving as both an independent scientist and program leader, the incumbent develops and evaluates strategies to improve access, participation, adherence and outcomes for the department’s programs; oversees collection and analysis of program data; supports and conducts outcomes and population-based research; and translates findings into operational and clinical improvements.

The position collaborates extensively with other Clinic departments, Philanthropy, community organizations and other internal and external partners.

Job Description:

Essential responsibilities but not limited to:

Scientific & Research Leadership

• Independently develops and conducts research and program evaluation.
• Develops research questions and analytical approaches utilizing program data, longitudinal datasets and other relevant institutional and population-level data.
• Evaluates the clinical and population impact of the department’s program strategies, including participation, adherence, disease detection, and follow-up outcomes.
• Identifies disparities and barriers to the department’s programs and evaluates interventions designed to improve access among underserved and historically under-represented populations.
• Collaborates with physicians, scientists, analysts and other investigators on research protocols, abstracts, manuscripts, presentations and grant opportunities.
• Supports development of IRB submissions and research protocols when applicable.
• Disseminates program findings through internal presentations, regional and national meetings, peer-reviewed publications and other appropriate scientific forums.

Program Operations & Strategic Leadership

• Provides operational oversight for the department’s programs.
• Develops and maintains standardized workflows spanning patient identification, referral, eligibility review, scheduling, screening, results communication, follow-up and specialty referral.
• Oversees program deployment and works with leadership to determine appropriate locations, schedules, community partnerships and capacity allocation.
• Identifies operational barriers and leads multidisciplinary improvement initiatives to increase program access, completion and continuity.
• Develops short- and long-term strategic plans for program growth and expansion.

Data & Outcomes

• Establishes and maintains a comprehensive program data and performance framework.
• Develops dashboards and reporting processes to monitor key measures, including program referrals, completed exams, utilization, no-show/cancellation rates, abnormal findings, follow-up completion, time to diagnostic resolution, cancer detection, stage at diagnosis and other program outcomes.
• Analyzes trends and identifies opportunities to improve access, quality, efficiency and outcomes.
• Ensures data integrity and works collaboratively with clinical informatics, Epic/reporting, research and analytics teams.
• Provides regular reports and presentations to clinical leaders and executive leadership.

Patient Navigation & Continuity

• Oversees systems that are designed to ensure patients move appropriately through the program continuum.
• Ensures reliable tracking and escalation processes exist for patients with abnormal findings and those requiring diagnostic imaging, procedures or specialty consultation.
• Partners with navigation and clinical teams to address barriers such as communication, language, transportation, scheduling and patient engagement.
• Promotes effective coordination among Primary Care, Radiology, Pulmonary Medicine, Thoracic Surgery and Oncology.

Quality & Continuous Improvement

• Develops and evaluates quality measures for the program.
• Partners with clinical and quality leadership to ensure program practices remain aligned with applicable standards, organizational policies and quality requirements.
• Uses outcomes data and evidence-based practices to identify opportunities for improvement and evaluates the impact of implemented interventions.

Community Engagement & Population Health

• Develops data-informed strategies to identify communities and populations that may benefit from increased access to programs.
• Builds partnerships with community organizations, referring practices and other healthcare organizations.
• Collaborates with Population Health, Marketing/Communications and community partners on education and outreach strategies.
• Evaluates the effectiveness of outreach initiatives and uses findings to guide future deployment of program resources.

Financial & Program Sustainability

• Partners with administrative and Finance leadership to monitor program volumes, utilization, reimbursement, operating expenses and financial performance.
• Supports business planning and financial analyses associated with program expansion.
• Collaborates with Philanthropy and organizational leadership to support donor-funded initiatives and communicate measurable program impact.
• Identifies appropriate opportunities for research grants and other external funding.

Leadership & Collaboration

• Serves as a scientific and operational subject-matter expert for the programs.
• Leads multidisciplinary workgroups and collaborates across clinical, operational, research and administrative departments.
• Supervises program staff (1-5 people), and mentors research staff, analysts, or other personnel supporting the program.
• Provides education regarding program performance, research findings and evidence-based practices.

Qualifications

Required

• PhD, MD or equivalent doctoral degree.
• 8-10 years of experience conducting independent research, outcomes research, population health research, epidemiology or related scientific investigation.
• Experience analyzing healthcare, clinical or population-level datasets.
• Demonstrated ability to lead multidisciplinary projects and collaborate across clinical, scientific and administrative teams.
• Strong analytical, written and verbal communication skills.
• Demonstrated ability to translate complex data into actionable recommendations.

Preferred

• Experience in lung cancer screening, cancer prevention, oncology, thoracic oncology, radiology, epidemiology or population health.
• Experience with outcomes research and longitudinal datasets.
• Experience publishing scientific research and presenting findings.
• Experience with grant development and externally funded research.
• Experience with healthcare operations or program development.
• Knowledge of clinical informatics, Epic reporting and healthcare analytics.
• Experience developing community-based or mobile health initiatives.

 

 

Pay Range:

$70,000.00 USD - $300,000.00 USD

The pay range listed for this position is the annual base salary range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. Actual compensation is determined based on several factors, that may include seniority, education, training, relevant experience, relevant certifications, geography of work location, job responsibilities, or other applicable factors permissible by law.
